What Everyone Needs to Know About Materials

Materials are always changing in availability and price.  Last year was no different.  There was another shortage in cedar materials and even Lowes and Home Depot were unable to stock a steady supply.

Treated Pine is not the “best” pickets to use on a fence. It is however the cheapest and with the low price comes low quality. The characteristics of a treated pine board is: shrinkage, warping and movement. Cedar is NOT a treatable wood, it is however naturally resistant to bugs. Unfortunately, this does not apply to termites. This is why the best fence you can buy will include a baseboard. Termites will not travel through the treated board to feast on the Cedar picket. Also – many people do not know that there is a faux Cedar substitute that is very low in quality and/or is not treated.  Consequently – after you have paid the lowest cost per square foot for a new fence – it will begin to warp, discolor and shrink just as soon as your fly-by-night fence/deck contractor disappears from sight with payment in hand…. Never to be heard from again.

In addition, not all wood is the same.  Other companies and individuals use builder grade wood rather than cedar or treated pine for post, rails and baseboards.  Livable Forest Fence & Decks DO NOT buy materials from building centers such as Lowes or Home Depot.   We only buy from suppliers who sell to businesses and have the quality and special materials that we demand. They are not available to the general public.

Our Quotes

Livable Forrest Fence & Decks only prepare quotes by inspecting the property, taking measurements, and checking current rates for materials.  If you get a quote and wait 60-90 days before you commit – chances are that the prices may have changed and our delivery of services may change depending on the season.  Typically, Spring and Summer are our busiest time of year.

Estimating a new fence or deck is more complicated that a linear foot price.  Factors that may affect your quote are:

Cost of removing and disposing of an old fence or deck.
Are there trees in the way?
Is there a pool which requires a safety net?
Does the property slope?
Are there any sprinklers that need to be moved?
What about public and private utilities?
Have the underground utilities been marked?

These are just some of the factors which can affect not only the cost but also the amount of time to complete the job.

Another lesser known fact, not all wood is the same.  Other companies and individuals use builder grade wood. We primarily use #1 Cedar and never less than #2 for both Cedar and Treated Pine.
